Symbolic of Pure, Bright, Controlled consciousness... The path of an alchemist is that of truth, and the Sphere is representative of perfection, with no angles, no edges, no disruptions, just truth...

The Cube, on the other hand, with its angles and edges, act as walls, barriers of consciousness, that protect that which resides inside, it's very own substance. Some might argue this barrier must be destroyed, others that it must be reinforced, an alchemist however...
